Teaching Philosophy

Providing an education for all students is essential for our society as it sets the foundation for a bright future. Whenever possible, students should learn through discovery. Through science my students will discover the world around them. Each child deserves the best education available and that begins with the learning environment. In my classroom I will strive to create an environment where students feel safe and comfortable to enhance learning. I believe students learn through exploring ideas, asking questions, and through applicable experiences. It is essential for students to respect themselves and each other. I want my students to not only be engaged in the subject matter, but to enjoy learning in my classroom as well. As a teacher, I think it is very important to build a rapport with the students. I want my students to see me as more than their science teacher, but as someone who really cares for their well-being.
In my classroom multiple intelligences will be implemented whenever possible. Every child deserves the opportunity to learn in a way that best suits their needs. In order to teach a child to their intelligences, knowing their learning style is crucial. To accomplish this I plan to incorporate several options for the students. For each unit there will be a major assignment in which they will have many projects to choose from. Each of the options will fall under a different intelligence. For example, they may choose to write a song, make a poster, or act out the content of the unit. I have high expectations for all of my students. However, they must be given the opportunity to shine.
Positive Behavior Intervention Systems (PBIS) will also be a contributing factor in my classroom to encourage positive behavior. Classroom management will be handled in a positive manner using a reward system. The students will earn tokens that build up to accolades. The parents will also have a major role in the classroom. Building a team that involves the parents, students, and the teacher is important for each student’s success. The parents will be informed on the day-to-day operations involving their child. This includes progress reports and additional communication as necessary. Building a team to advocate for the students creates an environment in which they can succeed. Students need proper support and it is my job to provide that for them.
